It’s safe to say that 2018 is the year of ‘notches’ where every manufacturer is trying to come as close to iPhone X as possible in their handset look & feel. One of the most awaited phones of 2018 turns out to be OnePlus 6, although only recently the company CEO Pete Lau confirmed that OnePlus would be launching a new handset in the second quarter of 2018.
What are the rumors?
There were no indications whether the phone would be called OnePlus 6 given that OnePlus loves to skip a number in between. But one thing is certain, the OnePlus 6 will have a 19:9 screen, which is a major hint that it is making a headway in the direction of iPhone X, like everyone else. That won’t necessarily be a bad thing though, given it’s the norm that people have come to expect. OnePlus 6 is expected to be launched around late-June of 2018, but it may even arrive as early as April, nothing is certain.
OnePlus 6 likely to have a ‘Notch’
Photos of OnePlus first circulated when they were posted on the Chinese website Weibo. They have since been taken down and the accompanying post has also been deleted but the two photos tell most of the story.
As one can see, the photo on the right displays a huge 19:9 screen with a notch at the very top, similar to the cutouts found on iPhone X.
Android 8.1 Oreo, OxygenOS 5.1
All OnePlus phones come with the company’s own Android skin called the OxygenOS. With OnePlus 6, users will get a unique Android 8.1 experience along with an update of OxygenOS 5.1.
Design & build
From the looks of it, OnePlus 6 seems to have finally adopted the vertical placement of dual cameras at the rear side akin to Apple’s iPhone X. A fingerprint sensor also placed underneath seems to suggest that there is still no under-screen fingerprint scanning technology adopted by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer.
Furthermore, the body appears to be metallic or some higher grade glass instead of plastic. Its glossiness is a sheer indication that the new OnePlus 6 will be prone to many fingerprints.
The screen is likely to be 6.28 inches and 1080 x 2280 pixels with 402 PPI pixel density. There might be Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the optic AMOLED capacitive touchscreen.
Camera quality is the primary focus of any smartphone these days. OnePlus 6 could have a 16 MP primary lens and a 5MP add-on with the usual phase detection, autofocus, and dual-LED flash. Also, the secondary camera would be at least 16MP with Gyro EIS, Auto HDR and video recording in 1080 pixels.
OnePlus will most likely contain Snapdragon 845 seeing that its competitor galaxy S9 and Xperia XZ2 both contain the same 845 SoC at varying clock rates. As far as the RAM is concerned, rumors have arisen that OnePlus 6 might pack an 8GB RAM, which is plenty for any phone of the present day, any more would be an overkill!
What would be great is if OnePlus 6 comes with an expandable storage slot instead of integrated memory. Although for many 128GB to 256GB might be more than satisfactory.
Wireless charging is all the rage today, perhaps OnePlus 6 will consist this functionality as well? Based on the image above, OnePlus 6 seems to be made out of glass or a metal but not aluminum, which sort of makes it likely.
The battery might be non-removable and lithium-based with 3,400 mAh. Not yet sure if it will support fast charging but we strive to remain hopeful on that front. What we do know about the colors so far is that it will have three variants: midnight black, lava red, and sandstone white. There could be additional time-specific premium colors of the model but we don’t know that for sure.
Off the bat prediction? It won’t be cheap! OnePlus has been known to make near-budgeted phones so far, but with the over burgeoning demand from customers for iPhone X-like features and boosted graphics, speed, more storage and best camera there’s no way that OnePlus 6 could ever be available for a low price.
